The World Food Program has warned that Afghans are being deported from Iran under harsh conditions while 10 million people in Afghanistan face hunger.

Harald Menhold, WFP Deputy Country Director in Afghanistan, announced on Thursday, July 10, 2025 that thousands of Afghan migrant families are returning to the country daily without any resources.

The organization urgently needs $15 million to assist returnees who have no shelter.

Menhold emphasized that these families have lost all their belongings and “should not lose their last hope.” He stressed that returning families are particularly vulnerable as they arrive with nothing.

The WFP is currently providing food assistance to returnees at the Afghanistan-Iran border in cooperation with partner organizations.

According to the International Organization for Migration, more than 1.5 million Afghans have returned from Iran in the first nine months of this year, with many facing pressure to leave or forced deportation, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty and fear among Afghan migrants.
