Gisèle Pelicot, the brave woman who publicized a shocking sexual abuse case, will receive France’s highest honor. She waived her right to anonymity to become a voice for victims of sexual violence and to “transfer the feeling of shame” from the victim to the perpetrator.

Her 71-year-old ex-husband, Dominique Pelicot, drugged her for nearly a decade and invited dozens of men to rape her in their home. This case, which shocked France, ended with Dominique Pelicot being sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Gisèle Pelicot is among 589 people announced on Sunday, July 13, on the eve of France’s National Day (Bastille Day) on July 14, to receive the Knight of the Legion of Honor. This highest French honor, first introduced by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional courage.
