German media outlet “Welt am Sonntag” has revealed that Pakistan has begun detaining Afghan refugees who were promised acceptance by Germany and transferring them to deportation camps.
According to this report, Pakistan has already moved 150 Afghan asylum seekers with German acceptance promises to deportation camps.
As diplomatic tensions between the German federal government and Pakistan over the acceptance of approximately 2,500 Afghans living in Islamabad intensified, German parties are demanding immediate government action.
Since the Taliban group came to power in summer 2021, Germany had promised acceptance to thousands of Afghans, but instead of transferring them directly, these individuals were first sent to Islamabad for further processing.
Adis Ahmedovic, foreign policy spokesperson for Germany’s Social Democratic Party, said: “Those who risked their lives to cooperate with us should not be left alone.
Germany must accelerate the evacuation process for 2,400 local forces who have been promised acceptance.”
In late June, Pakistani officials raided guesthouses and detained Afghans whose visas had expired. The German opposition strongly criticizes the government’s approach.
Meanwhile, the right-wing Alternative for Germany party is calling for cancellation of existing acceptance promises for Afghans.
Johann Wadephul, Germany’s Foreign Minister, previously emphasized that the government will honor existing commitments to those stranded in Pakistan, provided these commitments are legally binding.
