On the fourth anniversary of the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan, UN experts have accused the group of gender oppression, human rights violations, and disregard for international law. In their Thursday, August 14 statement, they expressed concern about the conditions of women and girls, public executions, arbitrary detentions, media suppression, and discrimination against minorities, calling on the international community to resist any attempts to normalize the Taliban regime.
UN experts stated: “The Taliban, operating without any legitimacy, have implemented an institutionalized system of gender oppression, silenced opposition voices, engaged in retaliatory actions, and openly disregard human rights.” The experts also described the Taliban’s system of gender discrimination and oppression as a crime against humanity and welcomed arrest warrants issued for Taliban leaders.
The statement emphasized the need to support Afghan refugees and internally displaced persons, noting that this support is more important than ever as Pakistan and Iran have intensified deportations. The experts stressed that change in Afghanistan must be led by its people, and each day of delay strengthens the “oppressive domination of the Taliban.” They called for a comprehensive approach including criminalizing gender apartheid, increasing support for civil society, and boosting humanitarian aid budgets.
