On the fourth anniversary of Taliban control over Afghanistan, UN experts accused the group of gender oppression, human rights violations, and disregard for international law. In a statement released on Thursday, August 14, 2025, they expressed concerns about the conditions of women and girls, public executions, arbitrary detentions, media suppression, and discrimination against ethnic, religious, and gender minorities.

The experts emphasized that the Taliban’s systematic gender discrimination and oppression constitute crimes against humanity and welcomed the arrest warrants issued for Taliban leaders. They also warned about executions and corporal punishment, mistreatment in detention centers, forced disappearances, and targeting of minorities.

In their statement, they declared: “The situation in Afghanistan is dire, but it should not be considered a lost cause,” and called for a comprehensive approach including criminalizing gender apartheid, greater support for civil society, and increased humanitarian aid funding. The experts stressed that change in Afghanistan’s situation must be led by the Afghan people themselves.
