Donald Trump, the US President, confirmed Wednesday that he has authorized the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to conduct covert operations in Venezuela.

He cited two main reasons for this decision: Venezuela emptying its prisons toward the United States and sending thousands of prisoners and mentally ill individuals to America.

Trump also referenced drug trafficking from Venezuela, stating that a large portion of Venezuelan drugs enters through maritime routes.

The New York Times reported that Trump’s classified order is part of his administration’s strategy to overthrow Nicolas Maduro, Venezuela’s President.

The US government has set a $50 million reward for information leading to Maduro’s arrest and conviction on drug trafficking charges.

The Venezuelan government responded by issuing a statement declaring that Trump violated international law and the UN Charter by authorizing operations against Venezuela’s “peace and stability.

” Caracas emphasized that Venezuela’s permanent UN mission will file a formal complaint with the Security Council. International observers warn that Trump’s statements, particularly regarding the CIA’s role, could escalate tensions between Washington and Latin American countries.
