Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of Qatar, has appointed Merdaf Al-Qashuti as Qatar’s extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador to Afghanistan. Al-Qashuti served as chargé d’affaires at Qatar’s embassy in Kabul for the past three years, replacing former ambassador Saeed bin Mubarak Al-Khayarin.
According to an official statement released by Qatar News Agency, the Emir’s decision takes effect from the date of the decree’s issuance and will be published in the official government gazette. Qatar maintains close relations with the Taliban and frequently acts as a mediator between the Taliban and the international community.
This appointment comes as Qatar has played a decisive role in securing the release of several American and Western hostages. Al-Khayarin’s mission recently concluded after serving as Qatar’s previous ambassador to Afghanistan.
