Indian authorities are investigating possible negligence in the preparation of raw materials for Coldrif cough syrup that has claimed the lives of at least 24 children.

Three health and drug safety officials from Tamil Nadu state announced that the solvent used was likely contaminated with toxic chemicals.
Tests revealed that the syrup contained diethylene glycol toxin at levels 500 times above the permissible limit.

These children, mostly under five years old, died last month from kidney failure after consuming the medicine.

The owner of Sresan pharmaceutical company has been arrested and production licenses have been revoked.

The World Health Organization has warned against three types of contaminated cough syrups including Coldrif, Respifresh, and ReLife.

These products pose significant risks to patients and can cause severe and life-threatening illnesses.
