On Sunday, December 7, UN Women warned that the Taliban’s ongoing ban on women working has seriously challenged humanitarian operations in Afghanistan, and if it continues, thousands of lives could be in danger.

The agency stated that despite restrictions, Afghan female staff continue to provide essential services through informal means and from their homes—services that also reach earthquake victims and returnees from Pakistan and Iran.

The United Nations stressed that effective aid to vulnerable women and girls is impossible without the free participation of female staff. Despite repeated calls to lift these restrictions, the Taliban group has yet to take any action.
