The Taliban’s governor office in Herat announced the shipment of 500 pieces of traditional and decorated glassware from the province to markets in the United States and Europe.

The shipment is valued at approximately 300,000 Afghanis, with the quality and clarity of Herat’s glass attracting foreign market attention.

Herat’s glassmaking industry has a six-century history, producing artistic works such as glasses, bowls, water containers, and vases using miniature motifs. Ghulam Sakhi, a glassmaking master with over 45 years of experience, says that traditional Herat glass has now found its place in global markets with increasing demand.

The Taliban had previously pledged to revive Herat’s glassmaking industry, and this shipment marks the first direct export of decorative Herat glass to the US and Europe since their return to power.
