On December 10, International Human Rights Day, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) warned that Afghan women and girls still face severe restrictions in education, employment, and social participation, undermining both their fundamental rights and the country’s future.

UNAMA stressed that these limitations, along with the forced return of Afghans, heighten the risk of retaliation and further human rights violations.
UNAMA and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights called for concrete action from the Taliban group to align with international human rights commitments.

They emphasized that respect for rights forms the basis for peace, resilience, and development in Afghanistan, and that all Afghans—especially women and girls—deserve access to education, health, livelihood, and freedom.

On this global day, UNAMA and other international organizations called on all countries and stakeholders to reaffirm and strengthen their commitment to human rights as a foundation for Afghanistan’s future.

The UN highlighted that human rights are non-negotiable and injustice must never become normalized in the country.
