Anwar-ul-Haq Ahady, a member of the Afghan Trust Fund, has warned that persistent poverty, unemployment, and the monopolization of power could lead to public uprisings against the Taliban.
He emphasized that citizens hold the government, not God, responsible for their economic welfare and daily livelihood.
In a recent interview, the former Finance Minister drew parallels between the situation in Afghanistan and the protests in Iran, suggesting that economic desperation is a potent trigger for unrest.
However, he noted that fear of repression and the normalization of hunger have so far kept widespread protests at bay.
Ahady cautioned that unless the Taliban group alters its exclusionary policies, the country could face armed opposition and street protests.
He argued that the current lack of viable political alternatives and weak resistance fronts are the only factors currently sustaining the status quo.
