Japan has announced a new aid package of $19.5 million to support humanitarian efforts and returning refugees in Afghanistan.
The pledge was made during a meeting between the Japanese Chargé d’Affaires and the Taliban’s Minister of Refugees in Kabul.
Since the Taliban’s return to power, Japan has contributed approximately $550 million through UN agencies.
The UN reports that 2.6 million Afghans returned home in 2025, placing an immense strain on the country’s limited resources and infrastructure.
Taliban officials have urged Japan and the international community to focus on job creation projects for returnees.
The ongoing mass deportations from Pakistan and Iran have exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, making foreign aid crucial for survival.
