Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid stated that their forces are coordinating with Tajikistan to prevent drug smuggling along the border.
He confirmed a recent clash was caused by smugglers attempting to cross illegally, resulting in fatalities inflicted by Tajik guards.
Mujahid acknowledged that the long, rugged border makes total control difficult but reiterated the Taliban’s commitment to preventing cross-border crime.
In the incident mentioned, Tajik forces killed three Afghan smugglers while two others retreated.
Despite these assurances, the border remains tense with multiple fatal incidents reported in recent months.
Tajikistan continues to express concern over potential infiltration by militant groups and traffickers emanating from Afghan territory.
