The Taliban’s Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice has publicly burned nearly 500 musical instruments in Parwan and over 100 in Laghman province. Thedestroyed items included harmoniums, tablas, and speakers seized during raids over the past year.
State-run media reported the burning as an enforcement of the Taliban’s strict interpretation of Sharia law, which bans music. Local official Abdul Mujeeb Hanafi confirmed the destruction, stating that music leads to moral corruption and will not be tolerated.
This incident is part of a wider campaign against arts and culture since the Taliban regained power. Musicians have faced arrests, and the systematic destruction of instruments represents a severe blow to Afghanistan’s rich musical heritage and freedom of expression.
