Ukraine has launched a state-funded program offering free sperm and egg freezing for soldiers to combat the demographic crisis worsened by the ongoing war. Originally started by private clinics in 2022 following Russia’s invasion, the initiative is now government-backed to ensure that the families of fallen service members can still have children, preserving the lineage of those defending the country’s future.
MP Oksana Dmitrieva, a key figure behind the legislation, highlighted that the law supports soldiers who face the risk of losing their lives in action. While the initial law required the destruction of samples post-mortem, recent amendments now allow for the preservation of reproductive material for up to three years after death, provided there is prior written consent from the partner.
Despite the program’s availability at Kyiv’s State-run Centre for Reproductive Medicine, initial enrollment has been slow. However, clinic director Oksana Holikova expects demand to rise as awareness spreads. The initiative is seen as a crucial step for Ukraine, where pregnancy rates have halved due to the conflict and fears regarding the future security of the nation.
