The law makes it nearly impossible for women to seek justice, requiring them to display injuries to a male judge while accompanied by a male guardian and fully veiled. Even if abuse is proven, the maximum penalty for the perpetrator is merely 15 days in prison .
Furthermore, Article 34 stipulates that women who leave home without permission, even to escape violence, face up to three months in prison. These draconian measures have drawn sharp international condemnation for further stripping women of their basic rights and safety .
