The UN Refugee Agency reports that Iran has deported over 120,000 Afghan citizens during the first quarter of 2026. This massive wave of deportations accounts for nearly 79 percent of all Afghans who have crossed the border back into their home country during this timeframe.

According to the official data collected between January 1 and March 31, a total of 152,100 Afghans returned from Iran. The ongoing forced expulsions follow a broader crackdown by Iranian authorities that began last year, pushing nearly two million individuals to return under severe pressure.

Although deportations have slightly decreased since late February, the sheer volume of returnees continues to severely strain housing, basic services, and livelihoods in Afghanistan. Humanitarian organizations stress that urgent international support is needed to address this growing crisis.
