The Canadian federal government has agreed to establish an independent panel to review the military honors and medals of veterans who served in the Afghanistan mission. This review will include the Victoria Cross, Canada's highest award for military valor.
This decision follows years of grassroots efforts by veterans advocating for a review of Jess Larochelle's case. In the fall of 2006, despite severe injuries, Larochelle single-handedly repelled a massive Taliban attack on a combat outpost in western Kandahar.
Canada deployed around 40,000 troops to Afghanistan between 2001 and 2014, marking its largest foreign deployment since World War II. During this mission, 158 Canadian soldiers lost their lives, and hundreds more were wounded in combat and roadside bombings.
