The United Nations Development Programme has warned that Afghanistan is among the most vulnerable countries to climate change. Despite its minimal contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions, the country has experienced a significant rise in average temperatures.
This temperature increase has intensified floods, droughts, and storms, affecting over 200,000 people annually. Recent severe flooding has caused widespread destruction, displacing thousands and devastating agricultural lands and critical infrastructure across the country.
The UN emphasizes that investing in renewable energy and community-based adaptation projects can help reduce public vulnerability. However, they caution that the risks associated with extreme weather events will continue to rise in the coming years.
