Afghanistan has completely lost its crucial transit routes through the sea due to ongoing regional conflicts and border closures. Major international hubs, including the Karachi port in Pakistan, Jebel Ali in the UAE, and Bandar Abbas in Iran, are currently closed to Afghan commercial goods and shipments.
The national Chamber of Commerce and Investment reports that merchants are now forced to import essential commodities through Central Asia. This alternative route is significantly more expensive and time consuming, drastically impacting the supply chain of basic goods and vital humanitarian aid deliveries into the country.
The blockade has caused a sharp increase in transportation costs, adding thousands of dollars per container, which ultimately inflates food prices in local markets. However, recent geopolitical agreements in the Middle East might offer a glimmer of hope for reopening some of these critical sea corridors in the near future.
