Reporters Without Borders has designated Afghanistan as the global center for exiled journalists in its latest comprehensive report. The organization revealed that between 2021 and 2025, at least 677 Afghan journalists were forced to flee their home country due to severe security threats and risks of death.
This staggering number accounts for nearly half of all exiled journalists globally supported by the organization during this period. The mass exodus is primarily attributed to the widespread collapse of independent media and the severe restrictions imposed by the Taliban government on free speech and press activities.
Currently scattered across 28 countries, many of these exiled Afghan journalists still face immense difficulties, including the threat of deportation from neighboring countries like Pakistan. The organization is urgently calling on global governments to provide emergency visas and long term residency solutions to protect them.
