Roza Otunbayeva, the former head of the UN mission in Afghanistan, has urged the Shanghai Cooperation Organization member states not to remain indifferent to the situation of Afghan women. Speaking at the SCO Women Forum in Bishkek, she emphasized the need for global solidarity with women in the country.
Otunbayeva highlighted the strict restrictions imposed by the Taliban government, noting that girls are banned from attending school past the sixth grade. She added that women are also prohibited from working, visiting parks, and traveling without a male guardian, warning of a rapid return to conservative norms.
Furthermore, she called on the SCO to focus beyond just political participation. She urged the organization to prioritize human security, human rights, conflict prevention, and the economic empowerment of Afghan women in their upcoming agendas.
