The senior regional director of the World Health Organization recently announced that successfully combating the devastating polio disease in Afghanistan absolutely requires significant strengthening and improvement of the country's health system. She shared these crucial remarks with the media shortly after her important meeting with Taliban government officials and health sector partners.

Hanan Balkhy further emphasized that if coordination in this vital area is effectively increased, the wild polio virus could be completely eradicated in the country within the next twelve months. She strongly added that delivering life-saving vaccines must be done simultaneously with expanding basic health services across all provinces.

Afghanistan and Pakistan are currently the only two remaining countries in the entire world where this highly dangerous virus still circulates and threatens innocent children's lives. Implementing regular door-to-door vaccination campaigns and establishing a very sustainable, resilient health system are exceptionally vital to saving children's lives in these critical times.
