The Foreign Minister of Spain confirmed that three citizens of this country were killed and another person was wounded in an attack in Bamiyan, Afghanistan. AFP reported that the other three injured are citizens of Norway, Australia and Lithuania. The Taliban announced that four people have been arrested on suspicion of being involved in this attack.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, while expressing his condolences to the families of the victims, said that he was shocked by the news of the deaths of Spanish tourists. The European Union and the US Special Representative for Afghanistan also condemned this attack in separate statements.
Bamiyan is the site of the remains of two giant Buddha statues that were blown up by the Taliban in 2001. Since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in August 2021, the group has promised to attract more foreign tourists to the country by providing security. Friday’s shooting was one of the most serious attacks on foreign citizens since then, and no group has claimed responsibility for this attack.
