The United Nations has announced that the third Doha meeting on Afghanistan under Taliban rule will be held on June 30 and July 1. In a statement released on Tuesday, the international organization provided details about the recent meeting between the UN Deputy Secretary-General and Taliban officials, as well as some Afghan personalities, stating that civil society activists will also participate in the upcoming Doha meeting.

According to the statement, Afghan personalities emphasized that any strategy for international engagement with the Taliban should address the humanitarian, developmental, and economic challenges faced by Afghanistan under the group’s rule. Some politicians, during their meeting with Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN Deputy Secretary-General, highlighted the dangers posed by narcotics and “terrorist groups” in the country.

The United Nations stated that the goal of the third Doha meeting is to increase international engagement with the Taliban in a “coherent and structured manner.” The UN Deputy Secretary-General met with Taliban officials and Afghan political figures, including former President Hamid Karzai, from May 20 to May 23 and requested the Taliban to participate in the third Doha meeting on Afghanistan.
