Local sources have confirmed that Zabihullah Amiri, the director of information and culture for the Taliban government in Badakhshan province, was killed in an armed attack. The incident took place on Tuesday morning along the Faizabad to Baharak highway.
According to reports, unidentified gunmen riding motorcycles opened fire on his vehicle. So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the assassination, and local officials from the Taliban government have not released an official statement regarding the attack.
Badakhshan province has recently seen a rise in attacks against local figures. While previous assassinations in the region were often claimed by ISIS affiliates, the perpetrators of this latest targeted killing remain unknown amidst growing regional instability.
