Taliban Health Minister Noor Jalal Jalali announced a "Five-Year Health Strategy" aimed at reducing Afghanistan's dependence on NGOs for healthcare delivery. He said the plan would reduce maternal and child mortality rates across the country.
However, the WHO representative in Afghanistan stressed that health goes beyond hospitals, requiring education, nutrition, clean water, and social support. This comes despite the Taliban banning girls from medical universities and health institutes for nearly five years.
UN reports indicate that Afghanistan records nearly 620 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births — one of the highest rates in the world — while under-five child mortality stands at 53 to 57 per 1,000 live births.
