The Taliban marked the fifth anniversary of the fall of the republic by calling it the "day of Afghanistan's liberation from occupation" and urged Afghans to be grateful and support the Taliban "system."
In a statement released Saturday, August 15, the Taliban called the collapse of the republic a "great conquest" and congratulated Afghan people and their own forces. Taliban officials were also urged to pay greater attention to religion, sharia, and public service.
While the Taliban celebrates the day as a "day of victory," many Afghans inside and outside the country remember August 15 as a "black day" in the nation's contemporary history.
