Nasir Ahmad Faiq, Afghanistan's acting representative to the United Nations, said on the occasion of Afghanistan's Independence Day that independence without the freedom of its people is incomplete.

In a post on X, he wrote that celebrating independence only holds true meaning when Afghans — especially women and girls — enjoy the right to education, work, and political participation. Faiq is the last remaining official of the former Afghan government at the international level.

Over the past five years, the Taliban government has imposed severe restrictions on citizens' rights, particularly for women and girls. Faiq stressed that true independence requires respect for the people's will and human dignity.
