UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon met on Monday on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit to discuss the situation in Afghanistan. The meeting came amid growing Tajik security concerns over threats emanating from Afghan territory.
The UN announced that the two officials exchanged views on bilateral cooperation and regional developments, particularly the current situation in Afghanistan. In recent weeks, armed clashes in Badakhshan province and a bullet fired from Afghan territory into Tajikistan's Darvaz region have heightened border tensions.
Afghanistan has been an SCO observer member since 2012, but since the Taliban retook power in 2021, the organization has refrained from inviting Taliban representatives to official meetings. So far, only Russia has formally recognized the Taliban administration.
