Local Taliban officials in Laghman have announced that two children lost their lives in a traffic accident in Mehtarlam, the provincial capital. This tragic incident once again highlights the problem of road safety in Afghanistan.
Mohammad Younus Yousufzai, the spokesman for the Taliban's security command in Laghman, stated that the incident occurred on Saturday, October 3, in the "Qarargah" area, part of Mehtarlam's second security district. According to him, a rickshaw hit the two children as they were crossing the road.
Yousufzai added that both children, who were others, died in the accident. He also mentioned that the children were members of a poor family.
Deadly traffic accidents have become a daily occurrence in various provinces of Afghanistan. Driver negligence, excessive speed, poor road conditions, and a lack of adherence to traffic laws are cited as the main causes of these incidents.
Just a day before this event, reports indicated that at least five people had died in separate traffic accidents in Baghlan province and on the Kabul-Jalalabad highway.
