Local Taliban officials in Takhar province have confirmed that five workers died following the collapse of a gold mine in the Chah Ab district. The incident once again highlights the dangers associated with non-standard mining in Afghanistan.
Naqibullah Masroor, the press officer for the Taliban's security command in Takhar, confirmed the news, stating that the mine was located in the "Shah Mastan" valley of Chah Ab district. He did not provide details about the exact time of the incident but promised that more information would be released later.
This fatal incident comes just one week after another gold mine collapsed in the same district. In that event, 10 workers were trapped under the rubble but were fortunately all rescued alive after a two-day effort.
The Chah Ab district in Takhar has numerous gold mines, which are often excavated by local people using traditional and technically unsound methods. These unsafe practices expose workers to serious risks.
Mine collapses, gas poisoning, and explosions are common occurrences in Afghanistan's mining sector. The primary causes of these deadly accidents are cited as a lack of adherence to safety measures and the use of non-standard extraction techniques.
