Sohail Afridi, the Chief Minister of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, has announced that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party will begin its protest march tomorrow, Sunday, October 4. He emphasized that the protests will continue until "the rule of constitutional law and the return of an independent judiciary" is achieved.
In a post on the social media platform X, Afridi stated that the march will commence from Ghandi Chowk in the Lakki Marwat district. Noting that Pakistan is a democratic country, he called the right to peaceful protest a right guaranteed by the nation's constitution.
The march was previously scheduled for September 27 but was postponed due to severe security restrictions and the blocking of roads leading to Islamabad. PTI supporters have repeatedly demonstrated for the release of their imprisoned leader, Imran Khan.
The Chief Minister accused the current rulers of Pakistan of having "forcibly" taken control of the country and of being willing to "set Pakistan on fire" to maintain their power.
He also claimed that after the "regime change" in the summer of 2022, terrorism was once again deliberately imposed on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Afridi said that Imran Khan has always stressed that military operations against one's own people and drone strikes are not a sustainable solution to combat terrorism and only serve to increase it.
