Local sources in Kabul report that the Taliban have released on bail three representatives of the Omid Sabz township who were arrested on Tuesday.
According to one source, their release was conditioned on them giving a commitment to vacate their homes. The source added that the Taliban warned them that if they refuse to evacuate, their family members will also be arrested.
Some sources had reported that five representatives were detained. It is alleged that they were severely threatened and insulted during their detention, with one Taliban member reportedly telling them, "We will kill you, who will question us?"
The representatives were arrested after protesting a decision by the Taliban's Ministry of Justice to impose rent on their homes. Residents say the Taliban has set the rent at 4,000 Afghanis per room.
Previously, a special Taliban court for retrieving usurped land had declared over 1,500 jeribs of land in the Omid Sabz township as "Emirati" (state-owned). The Ministry of Justice then gave residents a deadline of August 6 (15 Asad) to vacate.
Protesting residents call the decision unjust and have demanded to know its legal basis.
