Mehrullah Hammad, the Taliban's governor in Paktia, has claimed that his group's rule has prepared the people of Afghanistan to live according to Sharia law, thereby saving them from "the torment of the hereafter." He made these remarks during a meeting of the committee for the implementation of the "Law on Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice."
According to a statement from the Taliban governor's office in Paktia, Hammad said at the meeting that he has implemented Sharia "one hundred percent" for all government employees in the province. He emphasized that the main goal of their government is to facilitate the full implementation of religious edicts.
The Law on the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, which is being enforced nationwide by order of the Taliban's supreme leader, Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada, is considered one of the group's most restrictive laws since their return to power.
The Taliban leader had previously declared that one of the main objectives of the group's 20-year war was the implementation of this very law. Based on his decree, regular monitoring meetings are held in all provinces, chaired by the governors, to ensure its enforcement.
Meanwhile, critics, especially human rights organizations and women's rights activists, argue that the Taliban use this law as a tool to suppress the fundamental rights of citizens, particularly women. According to them, this law has led to the systematic exclusion of women from the public sphere and the restriction of individual and social freedoms.
