Navanethem Pillay, the South African jurist and 2026 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, is a long-standing and prominent supporter of women's rights in Afghanistan. She has repeatedly emphasized the need to protect the fundamental rights of Afghan women and to recognize "gender apartheid" as a crime against humanity.
Ms. Pillay, who has dedicated decades of her life to defending human rights and fighting discrimination, has continued her advocacy for the women of Afghanistan following the Taliban's return to power. In her writings, she has strongly criticized the Taliban's repressive policies against women and girls, comparing the situation to the apartheid system in her native South Africa.
In an article published in March of this year, the Nobel laureate wrote, "The Taliban have established a fiercely repressive system that almost completely eliminates women from public spheres and dialogue." She cited the bans on women's education and work, and restrictions on their freedom of movement, as examples of this systemic discrimination.
During her tenure as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014, Navanethem Pillay consistently paid special attention to the human rights situation in Afghanistan. During a visit to Kabul in September 2013, she stressed the importance of protecting the gains made by Afghan women and warned of the threats they faced.
In addition to her international work, Ms. Pillay is a board member of the "Women's Forum for Afghanistan." Asila Wardak, the founder of the forum, told Afghanistan International that Navi Pillay played a prominent role in the establishment of the organization and has worked for years to support Afghan women.
"Navi Pillay has stood by Afghan women for years, defended their rights, and has been a voice of justice and solidarity in the most difficult of times," Ms. Wardak said. The awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Ms. Pillay, a champion of international and women's rights, has raised hopes for increased global attention on the plight of women in Afghanistan.
