TOLO TV, one of Afghanistan's most-watched private television networks, has marked its 22nd anniversary. Founded in October 2004 by the Moby Group, the network has played a significant role in shaping the country's media landscape, popular culture, and news reporting over the past two decades.

Before the political changes of 2021, TOLO transformed Afghanistan's media scene by introducing innovative programming, including television series, talent shows like "Afghan Star," and heated political debates. The establishment of TOLOnews as a 24-hour news channel was another major step forward in providing timely information.

However, with the return of the Taliban government in August 2021, TOLO, like other media outlets, faced unprecedented challenges. The departure of numerous experienced journalists and staff, the suspension of music and entertainment programs, and severe content restrictions have pushed the network into a new phase of its operations.

According to news reports, restrictions on freedom of expression and media activities have increased during this period. The Taliban government has issued new directives for media, including mandatory face coverings for female presenters, a ban on broadcasting certain series, and limitations on critical news coverage.

Furthermore, security threats have always been a serious concern for the network's employees. One of the deadliest incidents was a suicide attack on a bus carrying Moby Group staff in Kabul in January 2016, which resulted in the deaths of seven employees.

Despite these difficulties and a decline in quality in some programs, TOLO TV is striving for survival. The network is attempting to maintain its presence in Afghanistan's media space by producing educational programs for girls barred from school and adapting its structure to the new conditions.

TOLO's 22-year journey mirrors the ups and downs of freedom of expression and the history of media in contemporary Afghanistan. This path, which began with the flourishing of free media, now continues amidst difficult political and economic constraints.
