The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) has announced the launch of a research and conservation project to assess the structural condition of the Minaret of Jam in Ghor province and find scientific solutions for its long-term protection.
In a statement, the organization said the project will be carried out in collaboration with other domestic and foreign institutions. The primary goal is to better understand the structural challenges facing the historic monument and to provide practical recommendations to prevent its further deterioration.
Built in the 12th century, the Minaret of Jam is a UNESCO World Heritage site and an outstanding example of Ghurid-era architecture. Located in a remote area, it faces serious risks from seasonal floods and erosion.
In recent years, concerns about the potential collapse of the minaret have grown. Experts have repeatedly warned about cracks and damage to its base and structure. The Taliban government has also made some efforts to protect the monument, but a lack of resources and technical expertise has been a major challenge.
The Aga Khan Development Network has a long history of cultural heritage preservation projects in Afghanistan. The organization has previously been involved in the restoration of parts of the old cities of Kabul and Herat, as well as Babur's Garden.
The launch of this new project raises hopes for saving this unique historical monument. The findings of this research are expected to provide a scientific basis for future conservation measures and help attract international support for the protection of the Minaret of Jam.
These efforts are important not only for preserving a historical structure but also for safeguarding a part of Afghanistan's and the world's cultural and historical identity.
