Authorities in California have announced that an Indian-origin man, who had claimed that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents had taken his wife away, has been arrested on charges of murdering her.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office stated in a press release that Gurinder Singh Gill, 28, was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the death of his wife, Jasmine Gill, 30. Her burned remains were discovered in El Dorado County.
The man had previously reported to police that his wife had been abducted by immigration agents, a claim that subsequent investigations proved to be false, turning suspicion towards him.
According to reports, an extensive investigation was launched after Jasmine Gill's disappearance. The discovery of her remains in another county transformed the case from a missing person's report into a homicide investigation.
Gurinder Singh Gill is now being held in the Sacramento County Main Jail and is currently ineligible for bail. Police have stated that the investigation into the motive and details of the murder is ongoing.
This shocking incident has stunned the local Indian-origin community in California. Social activists and family members of the victim have called for justice. The case has received widespread coverage in both American and Indian media.
Officials have said they will examine all available evidence to ensure that justice is fully served. More details about the case will be released as the investigation progresses.
