The director general of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Shatrujeet Kapur, has provided the first official confirmation of ongoing face-offs with Chinese troops at several locations along the border in Arunachal Pradesh since July.
Speaking on Thursday (October 22), Kapur said, "In the past few days, a situation arose where face-off happened at several locations in Arunachal and it still continues." This is the first official acknowledgment of how widespread the tensions have become on the northeastern frontier.
Speaking at the force's annual felicitation ceremony in Rajasthan, he added that the ITBP's "Shaurya" commandos have been at the center of these confrontations, playing an exemplary role.
"Our newly raised Shaurya commandos played an exemplary role in this. ITBP was raised as a mountain guerrilla force, and we were given border guarding duty along China in 2004," Kapur stated.
He emphasized that the force does not intend to abandon its original role. A specialized high-altitude mountain-fighting unit, distinct from the army, is currently being raised.
"We will soon have one full battalion of Shaurya commandos; high-altitude deployment is our strength," the ITBP chief added. These remarks signal India's preparedness to counter border challenges with China.
