Former U.S. President Donald Trump has thrown his support behind Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy's controversial campaign ad targeting his Democratic rival, Amy Acton, urging him to keep it on air despite widespread criticism.

The ad, part of a $4 million campaign, features Acton’s estranged mother, Donna Arthur, accusing her daughter of lying about her childhood experiences. Acton, a former director of Ohio’s health department, has publicly spoken about experiencing neglect, homelessness, and sexual abuse as a child.

Acton has stated she was sexually abused by her stepfather in the 1970s. She has not seen her mother since a 1978 court proceeding where her mother lost custody of her.

The advertisement has sparked a political firestorm in Ohio. Several Republican leaders have questioned the decision to ing Acton's family history and allegations of childhood trauma into the gubernatorial race.

Despite the backlash, which includes criticism from Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, Trump has encouraged Ramaswamy to continue running the ad, according to news reports.

Trump's support highlights the aggressive strategy of Ramaswamy's campaign, which is willing to use personal and sensitive topics against opponents to win the election, even in the face of significant controversy.
