Local Taliban officials in Baghlan province have announced that a collision between a 580-type passenger vehicle and a tanker in northern Salang has resulted in at least five deaths and 20 injuries. This is the second report on the incident, with slightly different casualty figures.
Nazirullah Abidi, Baghlan's general director of traffic, stated that the accident occurred around 2:00 a.m. on Friday, October 30, at the entrance to the northern Salang pass. He added that the deceased and the injured have been transported to a hospital.
An investigation into the exact cause of the deadly crash has been initiated. The Salang Highway, connecting the northern provinces to Kabul, is notoriously dangerous due to its mountainous terrain and heavy vehicle traffic, frequently leading to fatal accidents.
Traffic accidents across Afghanistan claim hundreds of lives and leave thousands injured or disabled each year. Experts attribute the high rate of accidents to deteriorated roads, excessive speed, reckless driving, and a general lack of adherence to traffic laws.
This incident comes shortly after the Taliban's leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada, issued a decree ordering relevant authorities to arrest and punish those responsible for causing traffic accidents in accordance with Sharia law.
However, the decree appears to have had little effect on reducing the number of accidents, as reports of such deadly incidents continue to emerge from various provinces on a near-daily basis.
