The United States has formally requested China to use its diplomatic leverage over Tehran to help bring an end to the conflict with Iran, according to The Washington Post citing an informed US official.
The report stated that US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, backed by President Donald Trump, urged Beijing to utilize its influence on the Islamic Republic to facilitate an end to the hostilities.
According to the official, Chinese authorities accepted the communication and subsequently relayed Washington's diplomatic message directly to Tehran.
The Washington Post reported that US Vice President JD Vance has assumed the primary leadership role in advancing the Trump administration's diplomatic outreach toward Iran.
As part of these continuous efforts, Vance sent a conciliatory letter last month to Mohsen Rezaei, a senior Iranian security official.
Meanwhile, Ali Al-Thawadi, a Qatari official acting as an intermediary between the White House and Tehran, noted that Iranian leaders are observing whether US midterm elections will trigger concrete shifts in policy.
Al-Thawadi stated that Tehran viewed Vance's letter as a gesture of respect and appreciated his remarks that war was a mistake, though Iranian officials still seek firm verification of Washington's reliability.
