On Thursday, the 24th of June, President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a 10-year security agreement between their two countries on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Italy. The agreement solidifies long-term US military commitments to Ukraine and moves Kyiv one step closer to NATO membership.
According to Reuters, Biden said at a joint press conference with Zelensky that the goal is to “strengthen Ukraine’s long-term deterrence and defense capabilities.” He added that the message of the G7 leaders to Russian President Vladimir Putin is that “our support for Ukraine will not weaken.” You cannot divide us.
“The G7 leaders also agreed to use the profits from Russia’s frozen assets to finance a $50 billion loan to Ukraine. Responding to Zelenskiy’s request for seven Patriot air defense systems, Biden said “several systems will be delivered soon.
” Zelensky thanked Biden for his “leadership” and support. The 10-year agreement commits future US administrations to support Ukraine. As the November 2024 US elections approach, concerns about the future of Western aid have increased if Donald Trump wins.
Zelensky recently expressed concern that Trump, if elected, might impose a “bad peace deal” on Kyiv. Some of Trump’s advisors have proposed a plan that would hand over the eastern parts of Ukraine to Russia.
