The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture, Alice Edwards, warned that Ryan Corbett, an American citizen detained by the Taliban, is at serious risk and even death due to lack of access to proper medical services. He asked the Taliban to provide treatment for Corbett in a civilian hospital without delay.
Edwards said that the conditions of detention of this American aid worker are very inappropriate and below international standards, and this has had a negative impact on his physical and mental health. Corbett is kept in a small solitary cell, without sunlight and sometimes in the basement, and has no access to his lawyer or family. This situation made him think of suicide many times.
Corbett was engaged in humanitarian activities in Afghanistan for a decade and was arrested by the Taliban in 2022. So far, he has not been formally tried and his crime is not known. Reports indicate that the Taliban are demanding the release of Mohammad Rahim al-Afghani, a Guantanamo detainee, in exchange for Corbett’s release.
