U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin Praises Qatar for Role in Afghan Evacuation
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin praised Qatar for its role in the evacuation of Afghans from Afghanistan in August 2021.
Austin made the remarks during a meeting with Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani in Doha on Wednesday.
“I want to thank Qatar for its critical role in the evacuation of Afghans from Afghanistan,” Austin said. “Your support was indispensable to our success.”
Austin said that the evacuation was one of the most challenging missions in the history of the U.S. military. He said that Qatar’s cooperation was essential to the safe evacuation of more than 124,000 Afghans, including former U.S. military personnel and their families, as well as other vulnerable Afghans.
“Qatar’s generosity and hospitality saved the lives of thousands of people,” Austin said. “We are grateful for your support.”
Qatar played a key role in the evacuation of Afghans from Afghanistan. The country provided air and ground transportation, as well as logistical support, for the evacuation. Qatar also provided temporary housing and assistance to Afghans who were evacuated.
The evacuation of Afghans from Afghanistan was a major humanitarian effort. The U.S. military, along with its partners, worked around the clock to evacuate Afghans who were at risk of persecution or violence. The evacuation was a success, but it was also a reminder of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
