The Russian Foreign Ministry has announced that Sergei Lavrov, the Foreign Minister of Russia, arrived in China today (Tuesday, April 20) for talks with Chinese officials.

According to Reuters, Lavrov’s trip aims to discuss the situation in Ukraine, bilateral relations, and the Asia-Pacific situation with Chinese officials.

Moscow had previously stated that Sergei Lavrov would hold talks with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, on “important issues,” including joint cooperation in international organizations such as the United Nations and the Group of 20.It is planned that in May, Russian President Vladimir Putin will also travel to Beijing to negotiate with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Moscow and Beijing declared “unrestricted cooperation” during Putin’s visit to China in February 2022, just days before the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Due to Western sanctions following the attack on Ukraine, Moscow has turned to Beijing as its closest trading partner.

Xi Jinping stated in a recent call with Putin that both sides must unequivocally oppose foreign intervention in domestic affairs, an apparent reference to the United States.

Beijing has declared that the relations between the two countries are at their best level.
