U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Meets with Qatari Foreign Minister
Thomas West, the U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan, met with Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, the Foreign Minister of Qatar, on Wednesday, June 14. In a post on his X account, West stated that the discussion centered around “the way forward and the future of Afghanistan.” During the meeting, the U.S.
Special Representative also expressed appreciation for “Qatar’s active role in developing solutions and finding common ground” regarding the situation in Afghanistan. Currently, Qatar is one of the key players in Afghanistan’s political landscape. The country’s relationship with the Taliban dates to the early years of the group’s emergence. However, the opening of the Taliban’s political office in Qatar, Doha’s unwavering support for the group, and the subsequent signing of an agreement between the U.S. and the Taliban have provided Qatar with greater leverage and transformed the country into an influential factor in Afghanistan’s developments.
