On the eve of the third round of talks on Afghanistan in Doha, Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, reiterated the organization’s stance on the rights of Afghan women.
He said the Secretary-General continues to believe that the rights of Afghan women, like all women worldwide, must be recognized.
Responding to a question about the UN Special Rapporteur’s recommendation not to recognize the Taliban government, Farhan Haq stated that the UN will engage with the Taliban as the existing power in Afghanistan but will not treat them as a legitimate government.
He once again used the term “gender apartheid” to describe the situation of women in Afghanistan.
